The first thing I would do with a new iOS or Android device would be jailbreaking or rooting it, so how do I do it on my new HP TouchPad? After some searching, I found out that all you need is to switch to developer mode and that it is already built in. How great is that?

To enable developer mode, all you need to do is to enter webos20090606 at your home screen where the just type it field is. This will let you start the Developer Mode Enabler and flip the switch. Done!

So what next? Jailbreaking an iOS device comes with Cydia, so what’s the counterpart for WebOS? Well, the name is Preware. Just follow this step to step installation guide for Preware via WebOS Quick Install. Now start up Preware on your TouchPad and install the following Patches:

Muffle System Logging

Remove Dropped Packet Logging

Unset CFQ IO Scheduler

Unthrottle Download Manager

Quiet powerd Messages

Faster Card Animations HYPER Version

Increase Touch Sensitivity And Smoothness 10

Remove Tap Ripple

Ad Blocker

Advanced Reset Options

Now your TouchPad should be incredibly fast. Enjoy!

It’s so much better than Windows Mobile. A lot of the functionality comes from the Android Market. So while I was downloading Apps from it, I couldn’t find any tools for managing my analog dual-sim-adapter, so I decided to write one on my own. The Android SDK seemed to be very well documented, so I thought I give it a try. And guess what, I found the resulting program to be useful enough that I purchased a Market-Account for $25 and published it there. Find out more on the MultiSim section of my website.

Currently, Flash does not natively support prevention of multiple instances, so a workaround is needed. Why would anyone want to prevent multiple instances anyway? Well, I use Flash as a Chat client, so allowing a user to run multiple instances would mean that they could join the chat multiple times, which is not really a wanted feature. So how do I prevent users from joining the chat multiple times?

As there is no way to do this on the client side, a server side solution is needed. So my first thought was to only allow each user with his account to join once, which should work fine in most cases. There is only one problem: When a user’s connection drops, the server wouldn’t know that and would block him from rejoining the server until the old client timed out. This is quite user unfriendly, so a different solution is needed. A different approach would be IP-based blocking (1 connection per IP), where this problem wouldn’t occur, but that would cause people behind routers not to be able to chat at the same time. Again unacceptable for me, so I thought of a third way:

Whenever a client connects to the server, the server will look through all existing users and check if there is one that has the same account. If no, it allows the client to continue normally. If yes, it will send a “alive” message to the other client and first let the new client continue as usual. At the same time, it will wait for an answer from the other client. If a message is received, the new client will get disconnected, as the user is already connected.

This approach works very well on my server. To make this system work for guests too, a unique key would be needed for each user, which should get saved as a flash cookie (browser wide). That will also prevent the user trying to join by opening the chat in different browsers.

Anti-Virus is good business. There are so many companies fighting to get their anti-virus software on your computer, you might even think that they release viruses just to improve their revenue. But when you search around the web, you can actually find free anti-virus software. AntiVir Personal by Avira is one of the best examples. Its bigger brother was tested by c’t, which actually gave it a pretty good grade and ranked it before other better known software like Kaspersky or Norton. So why pay money if you get something better for free?

Anti-virus software protects your computer from viruses, but is it really that easy to get infected? In Windows XP, I’d say yes. There is nothing easier than getting a virus in XP by just using Internet Explorer. Whenever someone calls me and ask why his or her computer is extremely slow, I’d ask them if they use XP or Vista. If they say XP, I’d tell them they got a virus. Whereas when someone who using Windows Vista ask me that question, I’d say no problem, it’s just Windows installing updates. Vista doesn’t have many improvements, but there is one I find extremely important in this matter: User Account Control (UAC). Windows will always ask you if some application tries to access system files, so it’s very hard for viruses to get into your system because Windows will ask you explicitly whether you want that virus or not. But still, some installers might get infected, so there is still need for anti-virus software.

So what’s better? Something bloated with anti-spyware and prediction of whether some piece of software is good or bad? Or maybe something simple and fast which just checks against a small database? When an average guy installs anti-virus, they do it to prevent loss of data. Who would want their data overwritten by some stupid virus? So they go to the shop and want to best anti-virus software there is and live in their happy world where they think their data is safe… until the day their hard disk dies. And all their data is gone. Hard disks have an unpredictable life time. My Samsung hard disk I just sent yesterday in was produced April 2007 but still broke within one year usage! Luckily it was part of my RAID system. Come to think about it, anti-virus software even increases hard disk usage, making your hard disk break even faster. Under Vista, I’d even say it’s much more probable that your hard disk dies even before you would even get touched by a virus. So in the end, you still lost you data, paid money for nothing and wasted a tremendous amount of time waiting for your anti-virus to check through your files. So how do we solve that problem? Well, we need Backups and a failure tolerant system. And surprise! Windows does offer the backup part via Shadow Copy and a special backup tool, so the only thing needed would be a redundant system. A RAID 1 will do the trick, which might be even cheaper than the Super-Anti-Everything-Software. And it does what no anti-virus software can do: it improves the performance of your computer! Imagine that, your files safe and your computer faster! Wouldn’t that be great? So when you combine fast and simple anti-virus software with backups and redundant systems, you got the solution to keep your data safe.

So where is the simple and fast anti-virus software? Well, I use AntiVir Personal. It’s quite fast, and because it’s free, it has no useless junk like anti-spyware protection or whatever else other companies are promising their software can do better. Avira does it too by the way, with the bigger version, their anti-everything package. Did I mention that Windows Vista already comes with anti-spyware/malware software? It’s called windows Defender and does exact thing other anti-spyware software also do, only for free. So why should I run several different software which do the same thing making my computer even slower? Anyway, like I said before, any simple anti-virus software will keep your data safe. Why not use a free version if there is one available?

But because the software is free, it has a catch. Whenever the updater finishes, a Popup Window jumps out, advertising the paid version of Avira’s anti-virus software. This gets annoying pretty fast, which is also the reason I googled on how to make it disappear. And I found a solution, on Avira’s Support Forum.

Windows Photo Gallery is the default program for viewing images on Vista. It’s pretty simple and works great. But it only works from the Windows Explorer. What if you want to use it with other Tools like WinSCP to preview images from different, maybe linux servers? I started looking for an Executable file to open the previewer, but the only one I could find is the Photo Gallery itself, which doesn’t open the selected image but the hole gallery. So how do I open the previewing version of the Photo Gallery?

A look in the file associations revealed the Previewer: It’s a DLLs function call. No wonder I couldn’t find any Executable. Anyway, if you want to use the Vista built-in Image Previewing tool with WinSCP, just associate *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.png as an Editor with the following command:

C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Gallery\PhotoViewer.dll", ImageView_Fullscreen !.!

PuTTY is great, but it’s even better with WinSCP. You can let WinSCP manage all sessions, press Ctrl+P and PuTTY will pop up, with your session password saved and passed to it. But there are some configuration issues coming from this kind of setup.

The first issue is more PuTTY based. When you open a new connection, it will probably use your desktop encoding, which might not work correctly if your server uses UTF-8. It’s possible to change the encoding by right-clicking on the title bar, but then you would have to do it every time. The solutions is easy, open putty for itself, change the setting and overwrite the “Default Settings”. This will work for X11 forwarding, too. These settings will apply to all sessions. It you want to custom settings for one session, you will just need to give the session the same name in PuTTY and WinSCP.

The second issue is that I like PuTTY windows maximized. And maximizing it by hand every time is annoying, so I created a link to PuTTY in the PuTTY directory and changed the properties of the link to open PuTTY maximized. Next I changed the PuTTY Integration settings in WinSCP to
%PROGRAMFILES%\PuTTY\putty.lnk
. This opens all PuTTY windows maximized.

This saves me alot time, too bad they are not the default settings.

XPS is Microsoft’s version of Adobe’s PDF. Its major advantage is that it is preinstalled on Vista and XP SP3. You can easy print everything as an XPS for later viewing. But Firefox users might encounter a weird bug when they try to open a XPS file. When a XPS is opened, Firefox starts and asks if you want to download or open this file. If you click download, you can save it somewhere and if you click open, Firefox opens a new tab and starts asking the same question again. Why is Firefox the default viewer for XPS if can’t open them?

The reason is simple: Microsoft Internet Explorer is the built-in XPS viewer, but Firefox takes all Internet Explorer file assosiations when installed as the default browser. So all you need to do for viewing a XPS file is to right click on it, select “Open with…” and choose Internet Explorer. You can make it the default application for XPS files too, then you don’t need to worry again when you open a XPS the next time.

Well, it used to get messy, but in XP, Microsoft introduced grouping (probably copied from Linux), where similar applications get opened close to each other on the task bar and get grouped to one task if they take up too much space. The first feature is really neat because it helps you navigate through multiple instances of one application. The second feature clears up the task bar but disables quick access to those grouped tasks. It takes 2 clicks to get to the desired application, that’s twice as much as you needed before. In the taskbar properties, it’s possible to disable grouping completely. But because I still want similar tasks to open up next to each other on the task bar, this is unacceptable. Luckily, there is a workaround to have similar task next to each other without being grouped to one task. Download this script and execute it or do the change in your registry manually: Find
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
and add/change the DWORD “TaskbarGroupSize? to 100. This will only start grouping to one task if 256 or more similar tasks are opened, which is fairly improbable.
